Two 5ks in One Week (In Two Weeks)

Huh?  What’s she talking about?  I promise, I’m not crazy.  I just need to explain myself here.

On Saturday, May 10, I will be running the VT Respite House 5k Jiggety Jog in memory of my Grandmother.  Then, on Thursday, May 15, I will be running in the Vermont Corporate Cup Challenge and State Agency Race with some of my coworkers.  It’s an annual 5k run/walk event that takes place in Montpelier, the state capital, and starts right on the statehouse lawn.

So, you see, in two weeks, I will be running two 5ks in the same week.  Got it?  Good 🙂

That is, of course, if my foot is healed by then.  It’s much better today than it was yesterday.  After work Ben and I went to the gym and did some upper body work, and then I went home and literally put my feet up.  I kept my foot elevated on a nice cushy pillow and relaxed all night.  I won’t be running tonight, and I plan to get properly fitted with some new running shoes before attempting another long run.  The pain is not at all sharp, so I’m assuming it’s just a muscular issue.  It’s not my heel, so I’m fairly certain it’s not plantar fasciitis.  If it’s not fully better in a couple of days I’ll head to the doctor, because I really don’t want to screw up my training with a serious injury.

Have you ever had a running-related injury?  How do you determine when it’s time to see the doctor?

Ugh, the dreaded running injury. When I decide to see a doctor depends on the injury. I usually give it about a week if it’s not severe pain, try to rest it and use the magic combination of ice and ibuprofen, and if it’s still bad enough to affect my running I might shoot my doctor an email to see what she thinks. This is also bad, but before I contact my doc I usually google the symptoms and then try to look at the hits that come up from running websites to see what others have done.

I had a random pain in my foot a few months back that seemed to come out of nowhere, and it disappeared when I switched to a new pair of shoes. Fingers crossed it’s something as simple as that for you!
